QR Code Scamming in Parking

NYSPTA - Public Service Announcement: Protect Yourself from QR Code Scams When Paying for Parking

QR codes have become a common tool in our daily lives, providing a quick and convenient way to access information, apps, and even parking services. However, with their growing popularity, cybercriminals are finding ways to exploit this technology for malicious purposes. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe. What Are QR Code Scams? QR Code scams, also known as "quishing," involve the use of fraudulent QR codes to deceive users. These scams trick people into scanning malicious codes that lead to fake websites or apps. Once there, users may unknowingly provide sensitive information such as credit card numbers, login details, or other personal data. Scammers often target parking systems by placing counterfeit QR codes on parking meters. Unsuspecting users who scan these fake codes could end up on fraudulent payment platforms, losing money or compromising their financial information. *Why Are We Raising Awareness?* While QR codes offer a simple, user-friendly way to pay for parking, they have also opened the door to cybercriminals looking to exploit this convenience. Although these scams are relatively rare, it’s critical to be aware of the risks so you can protect yourself from potential fraud. *How to Identify and Avoid QR Code Scams:* Here are a few key tips to keep in mind when using QR codes, especially for parking:

  • Inspect the Code: Before scanning, take a close look at the QR code. Does it look altered or placed over another code? Legitimate QR codes will always be seamlessly integrated into signage or stickers, not pasted over them.

  • Check the URL: Always verify that the website you’re directed to is the official one. Scammers often create fake URLs that look very similar to legitimate websites. Make sure you're on the right site before entering any payment information.

  • App Downloads Are Always Free: If you’re asked to pay to download a parking app, it’s a scam. Parking apps are free to download. Only use official stores like Google Play or the Apple App Store to get them.

*Additional Safety Tips:*

  • *Use Official Apps:* To avoid QR scams altogether, download the official parking app directly from your app store or visit the parking provider’s official website to save the correct URL. This ensures you're accessing the right platform every time.

  • *Text-to-Park Option:* Where available, use text-to-park services to skip QR codes entirely. This secure option helps prevent any chance of being directed to a fraudulent site.

*Examples of Scams to Watch Out For:*

  • Scammers may place fake QR codes over official ones on parking meters.

  • Fraudulent codes might be sent via email or text, pretending to be from legitimate companies.

  • Social media ads could feature fake codes asking you to confirm sensitive information.

*Stay Safe and Enjoy the Convenience of QR Codes* While QR codes are a helpful tool, staying vigilant is key to protecting yourself from scams. By following these simple steps, you can continue to enjoy the ease of paying for parking without falling victim to fraud. Stay safe, stay alert, and always double-check before you scan!

Happy Holidays and a Heartfelt “Thank You”!

Dear Members and Supporters of NYSPTA,

It pleases me to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.  I have often expressed that there is something truly special about the New York State Parking and Transportation Association.  That “special” thing is you!  While I am extremely proud of the Association’s ability to advance its mission throughout the years (https://www.nysparkingandtransportation.com/what-we-do), I am mostly happy about the manner in which we do it.  I refer to this group (our Association) as “special” because nowhere else will you find such a complete collection of kind, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, generous and selfless individuals.   I would also be remiss if I did not share a warm, heartfelt “thank you” for your friendship and support, especially over the last two (2) years when I have served as President of the Association.

I am also truly excited about the future of the Association.  It would be difficult to find a more caring and enthusiastic leader than incoming President Krista Tassa.  Krista will enter 2024 with an incredible group of eleven (11) other Board Members who all share the same kindness and enthusiasm.  We wish them all the very best and we are delighted to know that the Association is in great hands.

Now join me and in true NYSPTA fashion, raise a glass and toast an amazing year in retrospect, followed by another toast wishing you all a happy, safe, and healthy New Year.

Best regards,

Patrick H. Phillips

President
